7: Roger Zelazny Quote of the Day: Here Endeth the Book of Launcelot

HERE ENDETH THE BOOK OF LAUNCELOT,
LAST OF THE NOBLE KNIGHTS OF THE
ROUND TABLE, AND HIS ADVENTURES
WITH RAXAS, THE HOLLOW KNIGHT,
AND MERLIN AND MORGAN LE FAY,
LAST OF THE WISE FOLK OF CAMELOT,
IN HIS QUEST FOR THE SANGREAL.

QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT

Context: The Conclusion of The Last Defender of Camelot.

Why I like it: Camelot is, in my opinion, one of the finest fantasy short stories ever written, and that segment was the perfect way to close it out.

  1. I'm really curious about the process that goes into selecting these quotes. Do you just go with whatever comes to mind and crack open a book to get the quote exactly right? Or do you pick a story you'd like to use for this project, then start thinking about which quote in there seems fitting? Or do you just reread a story and pick something along the way?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

(Loving the quotes and commentary, by the way.)

Generally this one, though I tend to google what I remember of the quote, and then copy/paste it, because, as you've doubtless noticed over years of reading my posts here, I make a lot of typos.

I tend to think in terms of memorable quotes anyway, and when thinking of a title, I tend to immediately remember the quotes I like about it. Sometimes I'll wake up with a story in mind, but generally I just head over the list of stories on the commentary page and skim it until I find something that inspires me. (Also, I try not to get too similar in theme to the posts that preceded it.) I'll then skim that entry, grab the book or google the quote to make sure I've got it right, look for a novel cover and post it.

There are also a few quotes that I absolutely knew I had to use, but I'm saving them for the end of the month.
