October 12: A Night in the Lonesome October-fest

Snuff's first words in this chapter are "slow day" and he's certainly right. It's more like a tweet than a chapter.

A few things of little consequence happen (bickering between Nightwind and Quicklime, anemia among the neighbors) and the chapter ends with:

I took Jack his slippers this evening and lay at his feet before a roaring fire while he smoked his pipe, sipped sherry, and read the newspaper. He read aloud everything involving killings, arsons, mutilations, grave robberies, church desecrations, and unusual thefts. It is very pleasant just being domestic sometimes.
Nice, quiet chapter, like a palate cleansing spoonful of sherbert between courses.

  1. I loved the juxtaposition of horrors from the paper and peaceful domesticity - it's like a cop watch law and order on their day off.
